Cricket Braun

I had always been one of those people who would say I could "never" do yoga because I was too fidgety, “itchy” as my dad would say, and balked at the idea of slowing down. Who has time to mediate, I thought. When I finally took my first yoga class in 1991, I realized not only that yoga was challenging, but a necessary antidote to years of running, skiing, ice hockey and stress. In many ways I had been unknowingly practicing asana my whole life. Many of the poses and pranayama I first learned in yoga class where astonishingly similar to positions and breathing techniques I intuitively discovered on my own. Doesn't everyone do shoulder stand when watching TV? Inhale and hold to calm down? Or sleep in supta baddha konasana?

I knew after my first yoga class in 1991 that this would be a life long love. However, it wasn’t until years later, when all four of my children became school age, that I developed a more consistent asana practice. While I have worked as a field biologist, preschool teacher and naturalist , for me, Yoga is a perfect synthesis of avocation and vocation . Raising children has made me realize that motherhood and yoga are symbiotic. The strength, discipline, focus and body awareness learned during my pregnancies, birth and post partum are ever present during asana practice; the routine, rhythm, mindfulness and reflective nature of yoga a perennial influence on my parenting (most of the time!).

When I am not practicing yoga, I enjoy knitting, skiing, beekeeping, bongo-boarding (Guinness World Record holder), gardening and playing with our dogs, ducks, chinchilla and hamster. Since moving to Vermont, I have learned from many yoginis: Lydia Hill, Kathy McNames and all of the instructors at Yoga Vermont have been endless sources of wisdom, humor and inspiration. I am currently enrolled in the Yoga Vermont Teacher Training 200-hour Certification.
