After attending my first Yoga class in 1999 I realized that Yoga is an everyday experience. Every morning I woke up and took that extra 5 minutes to stretch in bed, every time I took a deep breath of fresh air before going for a run, every time I took a chance and tried something new I was doing Yoga! I started practicing Bikram at a studio in central Vermont. I loved the heat and the consistency of the practice that allowed me to witness my progression.
In 2001, I moved to Australia for university. I attended classes at large studios all over Sydney but felt a lack of community within them. I began practicing on my own, just going down to the beach and finding some personal space and time to connect my body and mind. Most of what I would do probably wouldn’t be considered “Yoga” by most of the passers by, but I loved it and it worked for me at that time.
Upon returning to Vermont many years later my good friend and co-worker Angela Madonia began to introduce me to Ashtanga during lunch breaks on the floor of our office. She convinced me to attend her Tuesday evening class and I was immediately hooked! An avid runner and cyclist I loved the emphasis flexibility AND strength. Since then I have had the pleasure of practicing with many of the other Yoga Vermont instructors and truly appreciate and admire them all.
Currently, I primarily practice Ashtanga, which influences my Vinyasa classes but am constantly seeking to improve my yoga vocabulary and hope to share that with anyone who is interested!
