I began practicing Yoga in 2001 while living in South Africa. At that point I had discovered my love for physical challenges through triathlons, backcountry skiing and long distance running. I already had tuned into the bliss that coincides with a focus on the breath, sweating and pushing the body. I found yoga to be more that just another activity to add to my list, rather, it has become a cornerstone in my life. It is like a running high that lasts and lasts. Yoga is a way to begin slowly, drop by drop, to fill a lake of inner peace that we not only rediscover in class, but it carries over into a lightness and contentment in every aspect of our lives.
Within eight months of my first class, I took David Swenson’s Ashtanga Teacher training course at Yoga Vermont and moved to Colorado to teach for Americorps. There, I taught yoga at a mental health center for middle-school students. What I discovered was that those who struggled the most in their lives and at school had an inspiring integrity and focus while on their mats. For this I truly believe that yoga has something to offer everyone. I also practiced with Pattabhi Jois on his North American tour and practiced Power Yoga with Tina Porter, a beautiful person and yoga teacher. Ready for a new adventure, I led trail crews in the Pacific Northwest, where I met Adam, my partner in life and love.
Many travels and adventures later, we returned to Burlington to find Yoga Vermont just as beautiful a space as I remembered and I am brimming over with thankfulness for the studio, especially the presence of Kathy and Scott. I also have recently taken a course in Ayurvedic medicine, and studied Thai yoga massage in Thailand, both have enriched my practice and understanding of yoga and teaching. When I am not at the studio I am learning to be a doctor at the UVM College of Medicine, studying by our woodstove, and playing in the mountains.
